Cruise Terms and Lingo for First Time Cruise Travelers

Not everyone needs an extra hand or foot to count the number of cruises they have been on. In fact, I bet that at least one of you reading this has never even stepped foot on a cruise ship. We all have to start somewhere and for the first time cruise traveler figuring out the cruise industry lingo can be a bit like learning how to speak Esperanto. Orbitz has a nifty little guide for first time cruise travelers and it includes some of the key terms beliw that everyone thinking about taking a cruise should learn.

DESTINATION

Cruise Tour: A cruise combined with a land vacation. The land portion may consist of anything from a hotel stay before or after the cruise to a fully escorted tour and airfare.

Port: A destination or city visited by a ship.

Shore Excursion: An activity or tour in a port.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Interior or inside staterooms do not have windows.

Oceanview or outside staterooms feature portholes or picture windows.

Balcony staterooms feature private balconies.

Suites are the most spacious, luxurious accommodations onboard.

Stateroom Category: A group of staterooms that are assigned the same rank because of their size, amenities, deck level, and location. Prices vary according to category.

Shipboard Credit:
A credit that is posted to your account upon embarkation. It’s yours to spend at the spa, in the boutiques, or almost anywhere onboard.
