Ocho Rios, Jamaica – Vacation Packages

By Miss Julie | December 24th, 2006

Nothing is a problem on this island paradise where reggae, romance and the Caribbean sun come together. Jamaica’s proximity to the United States, its laid back nature, claims to Negril and PLENTY of resorts make it a top tourist destination. At 4,411 square miles, it is the third largest island in the Caribbean after Cuba and Puerto Rico. Geographically, it is a cornucopia of scenic wonders. Miles of soft sand beaches and lush greenery line the coasts, and high mountains loom inland. Overall, the terrain is very mountainous, with half of the land rising above 1,000 ft. The highest point, Blue Mountain Peak, soars to 7,402 ft – higher than any in the eastern half of North America.

An hour and a half east of Montego Bay and a similar distance to the north of Kingston, Ocho Rios anchors Jamaica’s North Coast. The lively harbor town is home to world-class resorts, lying at the base of an escarpment and enjoying a serene mountain backdrop. Ocho Rios wraps around Ocho Rios Bay, which is lined with broad, white-sand beaches. Ocho Rios is not named for the Spanish ‘eight rivers’, but rather the Spanish word chorreras, meaning ‘the waterfalls’.
