Fall vacation and travel deals heat up

By Miss Julie | September 8th, 2009

fallfoliageAs I prepare to kiss sun dresses, big sunglasses and sweaty nights goodbye, I am also welcoming a whole host of spectacular fall travel deals. While the season of long, hot days, festivals, river floating and sunshine may be over, the best shoulder season travel deals are just starting to be rolled out. With the traditional end-of-summer holiday weekend behind us and the droves returning to school and work until the holidays, fall is actually an ideal time to plan getaways and keep some extra cash in your pocket at the same time. With cheaper air fares, lower rates at hotels and fewer tourists just about everywhere, autumn is certainly the time to take advantage on big sales in both the hotel and airline industries. In fact, September and October are among the cheapest times of the year to score a deal on cheap air tickets and head out traveling. The travel industry calls it “shoulder season” because September and October are sandwiched between summer vacations and holiday trips. Discounts are deepest to destinations considered off-peak in the fall, including Europe and the Caribbean. Experts say airlines like American, United and Alaska are among the carriers touting Autumn deals. Pair this usual shoulder season with a tough economy and you’ve got the makings for some really great deals on travel to just about anywhere.

If you are set on wanting to do a shorter weekend trip to scope out some fall foliage, the New York Times has a great article on colorful deals for leaf-peeping season. Included in the NY Times run down is a deal at the Hyatt Regency on Goat Island in Rhode Island where you can enjoy a Fall Foliage package with rates starting at $239 in September, $179 in October and $159 in November.

If you are craving a little European flavor, but aren’t sure you have the money for a trip across the Atlantic, fall is also an ideal time to score a deal on airfare to Montreal and maybe even get a cheap hotel in Montreal. With plenty of foliage opportunities and a great French flavor, Montreal may be the perfect place to head this fall. This became especially evident when I saw a deal for 50% off a downtown Montreal hotelmaking the Delta in Montreal only $90/night for stays through September.
