Avoiding Cruise Illnesses

You’ve probably read about cruise ships where passengers end up getting violently ill from gastrointestinal and other not so pleasant diseases. Slate.com attempts to answer the question as to why cruise ships are such breeding grounds for these types diseases. Among the useful information you can take away from the article is the importance of having your own toilet. While it might be easy to try to save money, sometimes paying a little bit more can make all the difference:

The close quarters. The virus responsible for the two most recent outbreaks starts out as a food or water contaminant but spreads rapidly from person to person. An epidemiological study of a similar epidemic from a cruise in 1989 revealed that passengers who shared toilets were twice as likely to get sick as those who had private baths, and patients who vomited in their cabins were much more likely to have infected their cabinmates.

Personally, whenever I travel, whether on a boat or on land, I take antibacterial soap gel with me. This can come in handy especially when visiting ports where the sanitation is not necessarily safe and in situations where you are sharing a confined space with lots of other people.
