The lighthouse, Point Ybel Light, at Lighthouse Beach has stood since 1884, when the entire island was a nature preserve. There is still a renowned wildlife refuge and bird sanctuary on the island.
Other popular public beaches include Bowman’s Beach and Blind Pass, where the two islands of Sanibel and Captiva meet. On the water you can swim, snorkle, fish or simply relax. In town you can view numerous shows, wander through galleries and shop to your heart’s content. If you’re in search of more physical pursuits, pick up your golf club or racket and head to the greens.
