Ah, Copenhagen (or København, to try the local language), a city of beauty, of culture – a vacation destination that might not be first in your mind, but only at first. Located on the east coast of Denmark, on the island of Sjælland, historic Copenhagen has become an important European transportation centre. The city sits at the threshold between Scandinavia (you can now drive from Sweden to Denmark on the Øresund Bridge) and the European Continent, and is the gateway to the Baltic region.

There is also Amager and Cristiania, and Østerbro, home of Amalienborg, the Queen’s castle, and the beautiful sculpture The Little Mermaid, forever looking out over the sea for her love. In the Nørrebro you will find the graves of writers such as Hans Christian Andersen (who wrote the original story about the Little Mermaid). In Frederiksberg you will find the zoo, as well as lovely parks and cafés.

Throughout København you will find beaches, outdoor concerts and movies. Even in winter you can visit the magical Tivoli Garden, and any time of year is good for knocking back a good Carlsberg beer. In Copenhagen, you will feel as if you are at the gateway to all Europe – and you are.
